Katherine Mahan LPC, NCC

Licensed Professional Counselor


Katie joined the University of Richmond CAPS staff in 2018. Her role includes coordinating Therapy Assistance Online (TAO) as well as serving as the liaison for the chaplaincy and the Center for Civic Engagement. She is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Virginia and Texas, as well as a nationally certified counselor (NCC). 

After earning her undergraduate degrees in psychology and studies of women and gender from the University of Virginia, Katie obtained her master's degree in psychological counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University. While in graduate school, she completed her internship at Drew University's Counseling and Psychological Services. Katie spent three years practicing at the Student Counseling Service at Texas A&M University before joining the University of Richmond.

Katie's special interest areas include relationships, gender-related concerns, sexuality and sexual identity, adjustment concerns, and other issues common to emerging adulthood. Katie tailors her therapeutic approach to the individual needs of each client, grounding her use of techniques in feminist and relational-cultural theories. Her goal is to create a space in which the client feels safe, accepted, and empowered to sustain positive and fulfilling relationships with both self and others.
